  1. Charlie Hartman Says:
What a unique and wonderful video! I’m used to seeing student-made films, and many of them are terrific, but this film is on a whole different level! And to think this was made as part of a service learning project! Great stuff.
  2. Urilla Says:
    Well said.
  3. Beth Conant Says:
Yes, I highly recommend this film! Great job, young people of Belfast!!

  4. Kim Says:
It shows that learning happens and most likely best absorbed when the atmosphere is relaxed, integrated with multiple age groups, interACTIVE, and FUN!

    Keep up the great work!

  5. Beth Conant Says:
Yup, relaxed. Think about how adults ‘work.’ Do they sit in rows quietly or do they sit/stand/lean/fidget/even sometimes interrupt when the idea is so important that they can’t wait!!? YUP! THEY DO! Why should kids be different?

Today we went to town. Gately, Daphne, Maddy and me rode with Tom. We met up with Zander (Caleb’s son).  Gately and Daphne went with Zander to recreate photos that were taken a long time ago. Me, Maddy and Tom went to interview shops on main st. She got a splitting headache and couldn’t do much. I feel so sorry for her. I didn’t need to do anything since I finished interviewing restaurants this morning and got some some fries at the same time. After we met back up with Zander and the girls, we took Daphne to the city park and Gately to the sardine factory and footbridge.  Then we came back to school. Now we are journaling and waiting for Ruth and Jenny to come back.  When they do I think we will show Ruth and Caleb what we came up with for costumes for the film.  I brought a few different things in. We have two intense filming days on the 9th and 10th going from 8:30 to 3:30 well more later.

The stuff that we just did is we talked and we talking about Belfast. We talk about the stories in Belfast. Next Tuesday we are going to the Colonial Theater to watch the movie that we made. And we are going to have food. I can’t wait to eat the food and to watch the movie. And when we go on the big boat we will get to go out in the bay. I feel good that we are doing this. I like to use the camera. I hope that James is going to look out the door of a helicopter. I like James doing the helicopter. I hope James is going to be in a helicopter.

Today we went Downtown to scout out locations and get more info about Belfast! We saw Caleb’s boat, the Train, and one group also went to the Museum. Downtown, we walked around, scoped out the theaters, walked around the docks looking at boats, and interviewed the man in charge of the train. It was very interesting! I liked looking at boats, because I think one of the best things about Belfast is the fact that it’s on the water!!!

We are having two intense filming days on Monday and Tuesday, shots of us at school and giving reports about Belfast. It will probably be about 7 hours on both days. Cool!

Grove Cemetery by Sam

May 31st, 2008

Grove Cemetery
The cemetery is located off of Main Street. Despite being a sacred resting-place for those who have passed on,it also provides quiet places to take a walk on well-kept paths and enjoy the exquisite views of cloud formations and sunsets. The cemetery also has some very beautiful pieces of stone sculpture that should be viewed and admired.

Belfast City Park by Sam

May 31st, 2008

Belfast City Park
The park was completed in 1905 providing many people with access to the ocean, picnic tables, horseshoe pits, a bike trail and many sports activities including swimming at the public pool. It’s also a great place to take a nap under the many different species of trees.

Belfast Commons by Sam

May 31st, 2008

Belfast Commons
Belfast Commons sits high on a hill overlooking the bay.  It’s a perfect place for many relaxing activities such as reading a book or a newspaper, flying a kite; playing Frisbee with your dog; playing a musical instrument or just listening to the waves and seagulls from a shady gazebo.  It provides a safe area for children and pets to run and play as well as a great spot for musical groups to gather and jam.

Heritage Park by Sam

May 31st, 2008

Heritage Park
Heritage Park is a great place to watch the boats come into the harbor or for watching shore birds ea mussels on a rock.  It’ also a great spot to have a picnic; read a book; collect seashells, driftwood and sea glass.  Music festivals are held here weekly during the summertime months.

The Footbridge by Sam

May 31st, 2008

The Footbridge
The Belfast Harbor footbridge was originally built in 1923 to carry horses, cars and people unite Belfast and East Belfast.  It was bypassed in the 1960’s by the current elevated Route 1 bridge.  Due to its age and deterioration, the footbridge was completely re-built in 2006 by a group of concerned Belfast residents.  It provides people with a quiet walk across the bay and a place for good fishing of mackerel and striped bass.

The Muck by Sam

May 31st, 2008

The Muck
The muck is a small pond on the corner of Miller Street and Lincolnville Avenue.  There is a maintained walking trail around the pond that provides a great place to explore nature and wildlife such as bullfrogs, fish and Canadian geese.  In the wintertime it is a great place to go ice-skating.  There are also local stories about a mysterious ‘muck monster’ that may live in the pond.

Thursday may 29th 2008 day #4of time for Belfast

Today we got little pieces of paper with questions that we need to answer in our reports. Mine said, “Does Belfast have it’s own cuisine?” and “Can you eat healthy on a budget in Belfast?” I think I can find reasonable answers to both these questions. I am optimistic. Then Ruth showed me, Maddison, Liddy, Emma and Decker how to blog. I knew a little, but I learned a lot. Ruth showed us how to upload photos, write pages and a little more stuff. We each have our own pages. You can look at them on the Time for Belfast website (which is where you are if you are reading this) move your mouse over the kids pages and a list will appear, voila!! Mine is Erin’s place. Liddy’s is LC’s corner and Maddison’s is Maddy’s space. Decker’s is Decker’s page. Right now, Caleb’s son is showing the people with Adobe Photoshop some tips. Well, thats it!

Hey, I’m Maddison. This is my blog space in the Time For Belfast movie productions. I am interested in Photography and horseback riding and I love movie making.

Celeb and Ruth have taught me a lot about movie making and the things you need to do on a blog. I hope things I put on my page will help you understand more about Time For Belfast and Belfast in general.

Bonjour, Hola and Aloha!

I am LC and This is my corner of the Time for Belfast blog! Wow, this is such an exciting project! I am interested in computers so blogging is fun for me!!!! I Hope you enjoy my posts! I will post some photos of Belfast! I hope they give you a good idea of what Belfast is like. :-)

Decker

May 31st, 2008

Hi my name is Decker. I’m part of our movie, Time For Belfast (which is about Belfast,Maine). I Iove this town! We’re going to tell everyone about Belfast. I’m going to talk about the future of the town. I think that Belfast has grown in jobs over the last ten years. We need more jobs in Belfast. Like, right between Reny’s, Dairy Queen, we now have a bank, Pizza Hut and a GoodWill that just opened on 5/24/08.

I will be interviewing the Mayor of Belfast. Asking about the future of the town, also what everything is going like in 20 years! I think its important to know the history of the town but its also very important to know the future of it! I Love being apart of this! Not everyone knows a lot about Belfast and this movie is going to be big!

Hi, My name is Erin. I am part of Time for Belfast blog team. This is my part of the website, Erin’s Place. This is all about me!!!! And Belfast, of course.

•Interests: writing, music, blogging ( Well, this is my first time but I luv!!! it!!! ) I also like internet, biking, dancing, swimming… well, I could name a zillion things!!!!! so I won’t bore u.

Time for Belfast is all about, well, Belfast. we are doing a film all about Belfast !!!!!! And we kids star the show, yay!!!!!!!!! We all have to do school work for real. Some people don’t like that, but I think it’s fun because I’m home-schooled. If you are familier with term unschooled, that’s what I am. I go to Toddy Pond school on Wednesday and for the rest of the week I am unschooled which means I teach myself a lot.

May 24th, 2008

I think it would be cool to bungee jump and fly in a helicopter. So far it’s been cool to work with professional gaffers and a soundman. I liked making clocks.

It’s going to be cool to start filming. I think the movie is going to turn out great. I’ve never been in a movie before.

I really like Belfast. I like the food testing and history ideas. History is my favorite.

P.S. I have a friend’s house right by the movie theater.

Magic Trick

May 23rd, 2008

Today Ruth and Caleb told us what they were going to tentitivly put in the script. Then they asked us what we thought they should put in the script. Me, James, Cameron and Nick raised are hands a lot! Cameron knew a lot about Belfast history. Me and James had lots of ideas.

Caleb said they were going to film us walking through town and then we would arrive at school and the teacher ( the guy playing him is a real comedian)the teacher is going to tell us it’s the last day of school. Every one is going to cheer. Then I popped the question would it be cool if i one girl didn’t cheer. Caleb liked that so I’m probably going to be that girl (yay!!). Then we gave some more ideas. I asked if we could talk about some of the foods the Indians ate, for instance, the earth apple. Caleb said thaats a good idea but i don’t want to many pics out of text book I said it’s a potato!

A lot of people came up with ideas. Me, Sam, James and Nick came up with most. Someone said we should interview someone who lives on boat. Caleb is like with a solar panel and foot pedal and Wes is like “gee who do we know that lives on a boat” and Maddy went to Caleb, “do you live on a boat with a solar panel and foot pump?’ Caleb said yes so were probably going to interview Caleb.

We talked about what we wanted to do for our reports and what they thought were good ideas. He told us about some stuff. Then he said like who wants to do traditional recipes (earlier i had said i would like to do some stuff that had to do with cooking) and it took me a few seconds to comprehend what he was saying. Then I raised my hand sooo high and Caleb said I was waiting for her to raise her hand.

Then Caleb asked who wants to do Main St. vitality (Main St. vitality is shopping on Main St.) Caleb explained what it was and me, Maddy, Liddy and Emma raised our hands. So were going to have a new girl (Maddy) and me, Liddy and Emma are going to show her some cool shops in Belfast.

I am doing vegetarianism organic food and eating right. I am really really happy!!! more later

Thursday, May 22, 2008 Time for Belfast

Well, today we talked about things we can do in the movie. I want to have the part of a girl shopping in Belfast!!! I would like to shop at Coyote Moon because that’s where I like to go anyway.

Caleb and Ruth have come up with a lot of ideas for the script and for characters. Along with filming and stuff, I would like to act and write. It would be fun to help with writing the script.

I wonder when we will start shooting the film. We already know a little bit of what it would be like from shooting the promo. But it will be interesting to have professional soundmen and camera people.

Caleb and Ruth asked for script ideas today. I did have one idea: maybe one girl going shopping in Belfast could be a super fashion diva, and she has kind of a low opinion of Belfast. But then she goes shopping on Main Street and changes her mind. I think that would be interesting!

I am going to be researching theatres in Belfast. It will be exciting! It’ll be fun when we start.
